Documentary style storytelling

Okay, you’ve got your brand logo. You’ve got business cards, letterhead and a landing page. Everything looks sharp and appealing. Congrats! You’re on your way to simply being transactional, just like every other company in your category.

Your brand is much more than your logo, website, your visual identity or your tagline. Those are the clothes that your brand wears. Mere window dressing for what your brand is all about. As many have said: “It’s what’s inside that counts.” And inside every great brand is a great story.

So, what is your story? What do you believe in? What do you stand for? How do you inspire your people? How can your customers join you in doing something important?

The mission of your brand is to discover your purpose and tell your story to anyone who will listen. That’s where we come in, with brand discovery and strategic storytelling that attracts fans instead of just customers. We’ve helped companies celebrate the bravery of children, put friendships over sales and show how they put their faith into action every day.

Because here’s the truth: people don’t rally around logos. They rally around how a brand makes them feel. They don’t stay loyal because your colors are memorable or your website is attractive. They stay because they are inspired to be a part of the story you’re telling.

Once you’ve uncovered that story, your marketing, hiring, customer experience and every other decision becomes more authentic, more consistent and ultimately more effective.

But finding your story is only the beginning. Telling it well is what makes it stick.

In the next post, we’ll break down the keys to effective storytelling and explore how to make your brand’s story unignorable.

Relationships are built through the stories we share.

When your brand tells an authentic story, you invite your audience to connect with who you are and what you’re all about. That connection builds trust and gives people a reason to care on a much deeper level than a transactional commercial ever could.

At ICG, we bring a unique approach to every documentary story we tell because we believe meaningful stories should be tailored to each individual project. Good storytelling should never be cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all, or plug-and-play.

When we approach a project, we want to know as much as we can before we load up the gear and fire up the cameras. The more we understand the people, the purpose, and the story, the better equipped we are to tell it well. There are three main things we’re looking for in every project, and we use the acronym ACT to remember them: Arc, Character, and Texture.

Arc

The Arc is the narrative blueprint. It’s the flow of the story—how we begin, where we’re headed, and what we want the viewer to feel at each stage along the way. A strong arc helps us stay focused and keeps everything moving toward the desired outcome.

Along the way, we’ll often uncover side stories or interesting details. While those can be fascinating, they don’t always serve the larger story. Sometimes they have to be left on the cutting room floor so the story stays clear, focused, and moving forward.

Character

The emotional core of every documentary is found in people. That’s why we believe Character is central to storytelling.

It needs to be clear who the characters are, what they want, what they fear, and what makes them who they are. The more we understand them, the more the audience will empathize with them. When viewers can empathize with and identify with the subjects, they’re much more likely to become invested in the story.

Texture

Every story needs some flair. That’s why we look for ways to add Texture to every project.

Texture is what gives a story its unique appeal. It provides context, personality, and authenticity. It might be a meaningful location, a hobby, an occupation, or the little details that help tell the story beyond words. It’s the proverbial “sprinkles on top” that make the story memorable.

Texture also shapes the tone and vibe of the film. It influences the pacing, music, cinematography, graphics, and all the other creative elements that round out the final production.

When Arc, Character, and Texture come together, they create stories that don’t just communicate information—they connect with people.

Brand Storytelling Evokes Emotion

A lighthearted look at cancer?

When people think of cancer, it is often very somber and sad. Sometimes the emotion can be anger or even bitterness. When I first met Karen and learned that she was on her third(!) bout with cancer, I was surprised that she was none of those things. She was funny, positive and persistent about life and especially her care. Often, in documentary storytelling you want to lean into strong emotions like sadness, especially with a serious health condition. Karen wouldn’t have any of that, so her story couldn’t either. So, our challenge was to make a video that matched the vibrant spirit of our subject and tell her story in an authentic and entertaining way. That meant doing things a little differently. We ended up with a light & bouncy music score paired with fun animations and photos of her life to create an unexpected portrait of a strong woman who won’t let cancer keep her from celebrating the things that are really important.

Embracing a Life Without Fear

College was supposed to be the season when McCall was chasing her dreams on stage. Instead, she found herself unable to eat, drink, or even get off the couch without pain. An emergency room visit revealed that she needed life-saving surgery to remove her colon, bringing her plans to an abrupt halt.

At first glance, this story is about overcoming a medical crisis. But as we spent time with McCall, it became clear that the real story was about discovering courage. Surgery didn’t just restore her health—it gave her the confidence to embrace life without fear.

Her journey carried her back to college, back to acting, and eventually across the world for a semester overseas. By focusing on her fearless outlook instead of the obstacles she faced, we were able to tell a story that’s ultimately about freedom, resilience, and refusing to let a diagnosis limit what’s possible.

A Comeback Story

Every great sports story has a comeback, and this one just happened to take place off the field first.

A passionate soccer coach had spent years battling a painful health condition that made doing what he loved increasingly difficult. More than anything, he wanted to get back where he belonged—on the sidelines with his team, coaching without pain.

That clear desire gave the story a strong arc from the very beginning. Every doctor’s appointment, every setback, and every milestone pointed toward opening day. One of my favorite moments comes when the coach proudly introduces his surgeon to the team before the first match of the season. It was a simple gesture that perfectly captured the partnership they had built. They were both all-in on the same goal: getting him back on the soccer pitch.

When the Caregiver Becomes the Patient

As a stroke nurse navigator, Orville dedicated his career to helping patients receive life-saving treatment as quickly as possible. He had guided countless families through one of the worst days of their lives and understood every step of the process.

Then, one day, he became the patient.

Recognizing the signs immediately, Orville called in his own Code Stroke while on the way to the hospital, trusting the very team he had worked alongside for years. The story naturally carried an interesting role reversal, but what made it compelling was how the experience changed him. Walking through recovery gave him a deeper understanding of the fear, uncertainty, and vulnerability his patients experience every day.

Sometimes the most meaningful transformation isn’t changing careers or overcoming impossible odds. Sometimes it’s seeing your life’s work from the other side.

Choosing to Stay

Some stories unfold over days or months. This one spans decades.

Faced with an aging facility and a neighborhood in decline, hospital leadership was confronted with a difficult decision: relocate to a more prosperous area or remain committed to the community they had served for generations.

The twenty minute documentary follows that decision and the ripple effects that followed. Rather than walking away, they chose to invest—not only in a new hospital, but in the future of Midtown OKC  itself. As the hospital grew, so did the surrounding community, creating a story that’s about much more than bricks and mortar.

By tracing this long narrative arc through archival footage, personal interviews, and historical moments, the film explores how one institution’s decision to stay became part of a much larger story of renewal and hope.

Finding Texture in the Details

Sometimes the smallest of details become the most powerful storytelling tools.

As we prepared to tell Jenny’s story of surviving childhood abuse, we spent time learning about her life beyond the trauma. One detail stood out: she loved playing softball as a little girl.

That simple piece of information became the visual texture of the film. Rather than relying solely on interviews, we created cinematic scenes of a young girl quietly tossing a softball into her glove. With every catch, the rhythm builds, mirroring the growing emotional tension beneath the surface.

The repeated motion becomes a visual expression of isolation, resilience, and the inner world Jenny carried as a child. It’s a reminder that texture isn’t just about making a film look beautiful—it’s about finding meaningful details that help audiences feel what words alone cannot.

Finding Her Voice

Some of the most powerful stories are told by the people who live them. At just ten years old, Desi became the narrator of her own journey through the foster care system, inviting viewers to see the world through her eyes.

Her story begins with the difficult circumstances that led her into foster care and the trauma that left her without a voice. But that’s only the beginning of the arc. As she found safety, stability, and eventually a forever family, she also found the confidence to speak up—not just for herself, but for other children still searching for a place to belong.

What makes Desi such a compelling character isn’t simply what she’s been through. It’s her ability to look beyond her own experience and advocate for others. She’s proud that her adopted mom was inspired to create Angels Foster Family Network, supporting foster families in central Oklahoma. Together, their story becomes larger than adoption itself. It’s about the ripple effect that can happen when one child finds a loving home.

By allowing Desi to tell the story in her own words and pairing her perspective with meaningful moments from her life, this film remains hopeful without ignoring the hardships that came before. It’s a reminder that every child deserves a loving family and most of all to be heard.
